Suggested improvements in Seattle Schools

Seattle is more interestred in saving money than serving their clients. About 20 years ago I suggested that the five Biology teachers at Chief Sealth High School pick out two or three students who were having difficulty and put them in a class by themselves. The office called them the "V" group, that is, they had completed the requirements for graduation, but were not eligible for college.
I found a JUNIOR High School text for them as well as films, and numerous laboratory activities. They were an enjoyable group to work with. I returned to Sealth shortly after my retirement to see now my 'V' Group was doing. "V" group? What "V" group? You guessed it. The school had dropped the class. It would appear that saving money is more important than our obligation to students.

Taking a small town teaching job

Left Police Force
Took high school teaching job in Sequim
2 classrooms at same time
But I let them get away with that to show my gratitude for my first teaching job
Student who had a music scholarship to Bellingham
But unfortunately she got pregnant
She was punished for it by losing her scholarship
But the boy didn't have any repercussions

Things started moving rapidly for me in September of 1967. I had been discharged from the service and needed a job. The city of Renton had an opening but refused to hire me because I had a college degree. Their feeling was that I would not make a career out of police work.....and
they were absolutely right.
Lucky for me that the town of Sequim needed a teacher and I signed a contract with them. The first thing I noticed was that a glass wall divided my room into two rooms. I was to teach two classes at once. I would give a bookkeeping class an assignmen then go to the next room and
get the typing class started. The school could easily have lost their accreditation over a stunt like this, but they were good enough to give me a start and I was grateful.
One of my students had a musical scholarship to Bremerton Jr.College. She should never have gotten into the back seat of that boy's car. Pregnancy interfered with and probably terminated her college career. In situations like this it seems that the girl always pays the price. The boy should have beeen made to make good on the medical expenses and possibly supoport his child.

No dancing allowed

Christian fundamentalists are my favorite people. If it were not for them I would have nothing to laugh at. My first teaching assignment was at Sequim, Washington, a hotbed of fundament- alism. Had I told them I was an atheist I would have been terminated on the spot.
The physical education teacer, in response to requests from the students, offered to teach ballroom dancing. To the locals dancing was sinful and out of the question. So I made up a little verse. Once completed and set to music, Ill look for a publisher. Here's a sample: Momma don't allow no dancing done in here. I don't care what momma won't allow. Gonna do my dancing anyhow. Momma won't allow no dancing in here. Isn't that cute? Sure to be a bestseller.
